Port excluded as ithas no ‘mainland’service: O’Neill
Instead, Larne, Belfast and Warrenpoint were listed. Asked why Londonderry Port and Harbour was not included as a port in her Department’s Fodder Transport Scheme, the Minister replied: “The Ports used for the 2013 Fodder Transport scheme were selected on the criteria that they have a ‘roll on roll off’ facility and service for road hauliers with mainland Britain.
“The Port and Harbour of Derry does not meet these criteria.”
The scheme was operated by Countryside Services on behalf of the Ulster Farmers’ Union and DARD.
A significant amount of hay and silage came in through the ports easing the situation on many farms.
