Deputy Mayor, Councillor Thomas Kerrigan and Lolita Cooke from Kabalikat with pupils from Oakgrove Integrated Primary School who created a traditional wind chime from the Philippines in a Cultural Diversity workshop organised by the Community Relations department of Derry and Strabane District Council before the summer holidays.
The event was one of 180 ‘Culture Quarter,’ workshops which promotes diversity and good relations to classes of primary schools across Londonderry, Strabane and the rural areas of council.
Under the initiative, primary schools are offered free workshops, mainly of which are delivered in their school. All workshops support the curriculum for Personal Development and Mutual Understanding Strand 2 ‘Mutual Understanding in the Local and Wider Community’.
There are seven different types of workshops to suit all interests they include ‘Different Drums’; ‘Marching Bands’; ‘Fantastic Philippines’; ‘Africa – Land of Cultures’; ‘Bridges – Shared Space’; ‘Feasts and Festivals’ and ‘St Columba.’”
