Twenty rounds of ammunition were also found. Mr Mackle had been on a motorcycle when he was stopped.
The bail hearing was told by a prosecutor lawyer that similar substances to the liquid mercury had been used in the past to make tilt switches for improvised explosives and booby-trap devices.
After entering the not guilty pleas on Wednesday, Mr Mackle was remanded back into custody.
A provisional trial date has been set for the end of April.
