Just 2% of £200m jail investment made

JUST 2 per cent of the £200m investment in a new jail at HMP Magilligan has been made since former Prisons Minister Paul Goggins announced the project over three years ago.

Current Prisons Minister David Ford made the revelation when asked by East Londonderry MLA Gregory Campbell how much public money had been spent on the preparation and development of the new Prison at Magilligan in the last four years.

He revealed: “The total costs spent to date on the preparation and development of the new Prison at Magilligan is £3,772,595.” This is just 1.9 per cent of the £200m investment promised in 2008.
