Council recognised for environmental management work
ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised standard that confirms that a company or organisation has an effective environmental management system (EMS) in place.
An EMS ensures organisations are meeting increasingly high expectations of environmental responsibility, as well as legal and regulatory requirements.

Hide AdHugh Kelly, the council’s Assistant Chief Executive, commented: “The ISO 14001 checks that a robust, efficient system is in place. We’re delighted with our certification following a process that has involved examining how we carry out operations and services and that this is in line with procedures that reduce risk and impact on the environment.”
As all public bodies have a responsibility towards sustainable development, the council’s EMS works towards achieving a high standard of environmental performance.
Lindsay Houston, the local authority’s Biodiversity Officer, added: “Some examples of good practice highlighted during our external audit process included the refurbishment of the pool plant room at Valley Leisure Centre and the UV pump system, excellent progress in recycling and excelling in achievement of EU targets, and excellent work on environmental schemes involving the wider community.”
